Durham ReUse Rodeo
What better way to celebrate Earth Day than recycling on a mass scale? Keep Durham Beautiful, the City of Durham Solid Waste Management, and Durham County Division of Solid Waste Management partnered together to create a “one stop drop” donation event on Saturday, April 22nd. The event was hosted at the Lakewood Shopping Center and nonprofits Trosa, Welcome Baby, Habitat for Humanity Restore, the Scrap Exchange, and First Pages were the benefiting organizations.
We set up our little tent and sorting table at 8:00am and watched the first donors come into the parking lot to drop off their goods. The ReUse Rodeo volunteers helped donors get boxes out of their cars, then placed them in categories in the large parking lot. The 5 nonprofits then sorted through the categories of items they accepted and took the items that fit their needs back to their tent to box up. First Pages volunteers and our friends at Welcome Baby Family Resource Center got first dibs on baby and children’s books that were donated.
Kids books came in spurts, with nothing for an hour or so, and then cars full of boxes of books the next! First Pages walked away with several boxes of great books that will be going to new homes in Durham instead of the landfill. A win-win.
Huge shout out to the folks who helped out at the First Pages table – Andrew, Erin, Jennifer (and her boys!), Laura D, and Karen. This was a first-year event for Keep Durham Beautiful, and we hope that it continues annually!
