Our Book Programs
First Pages is devoted helping children ages 0-5 in Durham, NC enter kindergarten with strong pre-literacy skills. Studies show that children who do not grow up in literacy-rich environments lack the pre-literacy skills needed to keep up with their more advantaged peers. First Pages is dedicated to helping families overcome three common obstacles related to their child’s early literacy: access to books, knowledge about early-literacy, and language differences. We are currently making an impact on early literacy outcomes in Durham by giving families free book bundles at easily accessible locations, in both English and Spanish.
Book Distribution Partners
First Pages provides 20 brand-new books (for infection reasons) to be given to parents whose babies are hospitalized in the Intensive Care Nursery and/or when they are finally able to take their baby home. Parents read the books bedside to their babies as a way to bond, sooth, and encourage development. We also provide 10 gently used books to be used in the waiting area for siblings and other children visiting the unit.
Since 2015 First Pages has provided approximately 250-350 children’s books each year to this special event. The books are handed out to parents or kids alongside Kindergarten registration packets at several locations throughout the community during a one-week Kindergarten registration “blitz” each March/April.
